Job Title: Mechanic I
Pay Rate: $23.68 
Start Date: A.S.A.P
Assignment Period: 2 months
Schedule: 9/80 (6:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.)
Location: Imperial, CA

Position Summary

Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled repair, adjustment, tune-up, overhaul and maintenance on both gasoline and diesel heavy equipment; and overhaul and maintenance of both gasoline and diesel-powered automotive equipment. Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled mechanical maintenance and repair of automobiles, trucks and equipment such as tractors, dozers, draglines, graders, diesel trucks, hydraulic excavators and other heavy equipment.
  • Repairs hydraulic equipment and checks for proper operations; accident damage on vehicles; and electrical components including starters and alternators.
  • Determines the extent and type of repairs and adjustments to be performed; and prepares estimates for cost of
  • Cleans and services equipment, parts, and tools; and overhauls and renews brakes systems as
  • Installs and repairs two-way radio, mirrors, wipers, lights, and other
  • Confers with the supervisor on work performed and completes required record of work
  • Properly utilizes and maintains shop and
  • Performs arc and gas

Marginal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Disassembles equipment or component parts of equipment when necessary and confers with supervision to determine what replacement parts or repairs are necessary.
  • Troubleshoots and performs minor and major repairs on hydraulic equipment and checks for proper
  • Overhauls engines and rebuilds valves, pumps, motors and hydraulic cylinder
  • Reassembles equipment and makes adjustments according to manufacturer’s specifications and accepted
  • Inspect equipment visually and with appropriate test equipment to determine extent of repairs or adjustments required; inspects equipment worked on to determine potential sources of trouble or unsafe
  • Field inspects equipment, conferring with operators to determine any mechanical or potential problems, makes appropriate repairs and adjustments, and records on maintenance log.
  • Stocks service truck and requisitions and picks up supplies and parts as
  • Confers with the supervisor regarding advisability of taking equipment out of service to make

Education

High school equivalency

Experience

Two years of automotive or heavy equipment repair and maintenance experience.

Licensing

Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California commercial class “A” driver’s license with applicable endorsement(s) during the initial six months of probationary period. Employees in this classification must comply with Department of Transportation physical and medical requirements, pass drug and alcohol screening and submit to random drug and alcohol screenings.

Endorsement(s)

Hazardous Material and Tanker Endorsements required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge

Basic tools and procedures used in repairing and maintaining heavy equipment; safety procedures regarding heavy loads and overhead crane operations; principles of hazardous materials handling; part manuals; basic operation and care of gasoline and diesel engines, electronic/electrical systems, large gear reductions, hydraulic systems, tracks, transmissions, air conditioning, and other component parts of all types of heavy equipment.

Skills/Abilities

Makes repairs and adjustments to heavy equipment under supervision; understand and apply information from manufacturer equipment manuals and specifications and shop service manuals; calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, metric system and volume; use on-line parts ordering and computer terminal; understand safety rules and regulations and work safely; use power and hand tools properly; be prompt and regular in attendance and work courteously and cooperatively with employees.

Hand tools, power tools, amp meter, multi-meter, measuring instruments, torque wrenches, air and electric powered tools, hammer, oxygen-acetylene gas welder, pry bar, hydraulic equipment, field service truck, hoisting and lifting equipment, generators, pumps, hoses, steam cleaner, high pressure water cleaner, stethoscope, magnifying glasses.
