MATERIALS TECHNICIAN

$18.35 /hr.

Schedule: 9/80 (start time: 6:00am – 3:30pm Monday thru Thursday and working Friday 6:00am – 2:30pm)

Location: Imperial, CA

Primary Function

Under general supervision, receives store stock items; reconciles, codes, inventories,stores and issues materials, equipment and supplies in the district’s centralized warehouse or storage yard. Performs other duties as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics

  1. This position will require working in warehouse environments and outdoors storage areas;and requires working as a receiving agent for materials delivered by outside vendors and/or delivery agents.
  2. The employees in this classification may be reassigned, as required, to assist other personnel or departments and perform other duties when needed.
  3. The incumbents are required to serve in after-hour standby/call out person on a rotational basis.
  4. This position, at times, requires the management of hazardous materials or waste and thus requires mandatory training in hazardous waste operations, hazardous materials spill response, and/or hazardous materials communication.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The examples of essential functions listed below are representative but not necessarily exhaustive or descriptive and incumbent may be assigned other related functions not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment for the position.

  1. Operates computer to access system application process inventory and project information through the materials management and project management areas;assists customers at counters with reservations on the system application process.
  2. Assists line construction and contractors crews with issues of all power materials and releases materials through the system application process; assists in the unloading and placement of all scrap materials being returned for salvage; assists incoordination of the staging of materials of ordered materials.
  3. Assists district personnel and contractors in the identification of required materials and assists in the selection of those items for release through the system application process.
  4. Assists in returns of unused materials or salvaged materials removed from projects by district line construction crews or contractor; inspects items for sale and inventories others for placement into store stock.
  5. Pulls and issues materials ordered through the system application process reservation system for departments; assists employees in the proper use of the system application process reservation system to correctly identify materials for release andusage.
  6. Operates forklift to handle all types of materials and equipment and; assists other sections using forklift to handle items; and assists loading of issued items.
  7. Receives store stock items from receiving, verifies count, and places in properlocations and bins using the goods receipt form; properly identifies and stencils wire reels, transformers, and other stock materials with item codes.
  8. Releases requisitions for items issued to mechanical, meter shop and service departments personnel.
  9. Records forklift inspections and maintains logs as required by OSHA and district’s safety unit.

Marginal Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assists material coordinator in identification, releasing and trouble-shooting of ordered materials; assists with daily inventory count of stock items.
  2. Assists customers in sales of district items such as salvaged materials, jackets, caps and miscellaneous items, and materials on daily basis, silent and public auctions.
  3. Maintains records and files of transformer sales, locations and where they are being installed.
  4. Assists in the receipt, identification and inventory of all materials received by the district receiving; inspects received items for correctness of count, as ordered and and files freight claims if material has been damaged in shipment.
  5. Assists in maintaining store areas, storage compound and yard areas neat and orderly; assists supervision in onsite jobsite analysis and inspection reports; and assists in maintaining control and access of closed storage areas.
  6. Delivers supplies to various departments within district yard; travels to job sites and storage areas to oversee the receipt, loading and unloading of materials.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education High school equivalency, supplemental college courses in business management,computers, records management and bookkeeping and; Experience Two years of related materials handling, issuing and computerized inventory control experience. Licensing/Certification A valid driver’s license issued by the State of California, Department of Motor Vehicles is required. Forklift Certification must obtain during the initial six (6) months from date of hire isrequired. Hazardous Materials FRO/FRA certification required. First Aid and CPR training required. IIPP training and wear all personal protective equipment required. MSDS training and the location of that information for all materials received, stored and issued required.

Knowledge Principles and practices of storage, issuing and inventory control for supplies, part sand materials; tools, equipment and materials used in line construction, electronic, electrical, mechanical, automotive and heavy equipment parts, general stationery items and supplies; computerized stock control procedures; computer terminal operations; computer operations and appropriate software; catalogs, manufacturer’s and equipment manuals; operation of forklift and other lifting devices; safe work practices; and proper lifting procedures. Skills/ Abilities Maintain physical and computerized records; conduct computerized and physical inventory; follow oral and written instructions; operate computer to enter, retrieve,verify and produce records; performs research on computer, internet, catalogs, manufacturer’s and equipment manuals; read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals; speak and communicate effectively to customers or employees; work safely; write routine reports and correspondence; operate material handling equipment to load, unload and store materials, supplies and parts; properly lift and move large heavy objects;calculate figures and amounts, discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area,circumference and volume; solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in standardized situations; interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form; be prompt and regular inattendance; and work courteously and cooperatively with employees, vendors,contractors, common carriers and the general public. Tools and Equipment Used General office equipment, computer, telephone, pallet jack, floor jack, forklift, hand tools, power tools, power saws, chain saw, 1-ton flatbed truck, typewriter, calculator,catalogs, manuals, computer printouts, scissors, tape, strapping materials and vehicle.
